The island of Naxos is a magical place! I am not exactly sure how I ended up with it on my list of places to go in Greece. I had decided on an island hopping trip for my Spring Break in March and had asked my aunt if she wanted to join me. Luckily, her answer was yes, but she was more interested in sticking to fewer areas. We settled on Naxos and Athens. I fell in love with Naxos!! It felt magical before the plane even landed.
Despite being one of the biggest islands in the Cyclades, I’ve heard a lot less about it than Santorini or Mykonos. I was panicking that I had ‘picked the wrong island’ before the plane landed. I learned that I actually picked the BEST island to visit!
Petros, with Naxos Premium, picked us up from the tiny airport. It’s a TINY airport. You can also take a ferry. In my opinion, it depends on the timing, price, and whether you get seasick. Our circumstances led us to choose flying instead. Petros was a light of a person to guide us on our trip! His role was similar to a concierge at a hotel, but Naxos Premium works with all the luxury hotels on the island.

Where to Stay in Naxos
Avgoustos Suites
We stayed at Avgoustos Suites which was beyond incredible! The views from the room are incomparable to anything else in this world. We had a window view of the Aegean Sea as well as a hot tub, lounge chairs, and a table on the patio. Although there are many activities you can do in Naxos, we were making this part of our trip our relaxation time. We still did sprinkle in a few activities each day. This boutique hotel has 4 rooms and sits on top of a family-owned restaurant. It’s a 5-minute walk from crystal clear waters and has the most relaxing aesthetic you could ask for. If you’re heading to Naxos, this hotel is where you want to stay. It’s removed from the city, but it allows you to be in a separate space from the tourists. Granted, we were technically visiting in the off-season before it was busy. Despite being there at the end of March, the weather was in our favor and this was paradise.
Endless Options
If you do not align with the preferences of Avgoustos Suites with location, price, or service, Naxos offers a diverse range of accommodation options. There’s something for everyone from luxurious beachfront hotels (like Avgoustos Suites) to charming guesthouses nestled in traditional villages. Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna boast upscale resorts and boutique hotels for those seeking a luxurious retreat with sea views. Avgoustos Suites is located right on Agia Anna with boat rides and water views at your doorstep. Families and budget-conscious travelers may prefer the bustling town of Naxos Chora with its wide variety of affordable accommodations and vibrant atmosphere. Alternatively, immerse yourself in the authentic charm of the island by staying in picturesque villages like Apollonas or Filoti. These are where traditional guesthouses offer a glimpse into local life amidst breathtaking landscapes.
During my time in Naxos, I only stayed at Avgoustos Suites so I recommend staying there, but there are numerous options to choose from so you can’t go wrong!
When to Go to Naxos
Naxos has a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, making it an ideal year-round destination. However, the best time to visit Naxos is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is pleasantly warm, shops and restaurants are open, and the crowds are fewer. This allows for a more relaxed and authentic experience. Note that many tourist experiences and restaurants will not be open during the ‘off-season.’ I went the last week of March and there were limited options with tours and activities. Luckily, the weather was perfect and we appreciated that there were no crowds.
In spring, from April to June, the island is filled with wildflowers, and temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, exploring ancient ruins, or lounging on the beaches. As follows, this is when more activities are available and is the beginning of the season.
Autumn, from September to November, offers similar weather conditions, with the bonus of grape harvest festivals and cultural events showcasing the island’s rich heritage.
While summer, from June to August, attracts the most visitors with its long sunny days and lively atmosphere, be prepared for higher temperatures and crowds, particularly in popular tourist areas. Our guide warned us that in the heart of the summer, the island is filled with people. There are many boats that take day trips to Naxos as well so the island fills with life.
Although it was the off-season, I loved being in Naxos at the end of March! Maybe I would have gone in early April if I wanted to do any cruise day trips, but it was perfect for rest and relaxation. Be sure to research when you prefer to go, what hotels are open, and what activities are available.

I am biased as Naxos is the only Greek island I visited, but I still believe everyone should experience the magic there. What To Do in Naxos
1. Explore Charming Villages
Wandering through the city of Naxos is a must. We had heard of the Venetian Castle of Naxos at the top, but we did not have much luck finding this as it was under construction. On our search, we walked through the white cobblestone streets and loved seeing cats roaming at every corner. It had a very homey feel as you saw people watering their plants or walking to work. The coast of this area is filled with many restaurants and a lively feel. It is a must-visit place to go if you are not staying in the city. It is important to note that this island does not have any public transportation. We highly recommended getting a rental car or arranging a driver. Since we did not feel comfortable driving on the narrow roads and we were planning to mostly relax, we had Petros with Naxos Premium at our service. Petros was incredible as he did the 10-minute drive to the heart of the Naxos with us. Naxos Premium, was super easy to work with and they were always accessible.
Naxos is filled with picturesque villages on the coast and inland. We only went to the city of Naxos and the Agia Anna area as we did not have a car and it was ‘off-season.’ If you are an explorer and want to see other villages, Apiranthos and Filoti are often suggested. They are filled with whitewashed houses, traditional tavernas, and stunning views of the Aegean Sea. Make sure to at least explore one area while in Naxos as they allow the Naxian culture shine through.
2. Discover Ancient Ruins
Step back in time to the Portara or Temple or Apollo, a massive marble gate that stands as a remnant of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo. This is very easy to walk to from the Naxos city. The walk is up a slight uphill and you can get fairly close to it. This is a beautiful spot for sunset as you get a view of the white city, the sunset, and the Aegean Sea. It is a must-do experience.
Furthermore, if Greek history is of interest to you, you can study the ancient city of Naxos at the Archaeological Museum of Naxos. They have artifacts dating back to the Mycenaean period. They have early Cycladic figurines, vases, and other historical pieces from this period. The museum closed during our visit so be sure to check ahead for its opening hours.
3. Relax on Pristine Beaches and at the Spa
The beaches in Greece are filled with crystal clear waters. Plan to spend lazy days soaking up the sun on some of Naxos’ most beautiful beaches, including Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka Beach. We were impressed by the temperature of the water and how salty it was. It turns out that the Aegean Sea’s saltiness primarily stems from its limited connection to other bodies of water, particularly the Mediterranean Sea. As a result of the limited exchange of water with other oceans, the dilution of salt content is reduced. Additionally, the region experiences high temperatures and strong evaporation rates. This causes water to evaporate and leaves behind salt in the sea. Over time, this process accumulates salt in the Aegean Sea, contributing to its high salinity levels. Since we were not there in the prime tourist season, we did not participate in water sports. If available, you can enjoy water sports like windsurfing and kiteboarding at Mikri Vigla Beach, known for its perfect wind conditions!
We also had the opportunity to get massages at the 18 Grapes Hotel, another spectacular luxury hotel on the island. This hotel opened on our last day (April 1st), so we were grateful to see another hotel on the island. Our massages were incredible and the staff was delightful. The restaurant at the hotel is also a must-try if you go there for a massage or decide to stay there for your time in Naxos!
4. Indulge in Local Cuisine
The food in Greece is beyond incredible, and the Naxian specials are even tastier. Treat your taste buds to the flavors of Naxian cuisine, which includes fresh seafood, locally produced cheeses, and delicious meats grilled to perfection. At Avgoustos Suites, every morning we enjoyed breakfast on our porch. They provided Greek classics that made our mouths water as well as cappuccinos and lattes. Also, the restaurants were wonderful! Naxos, Greece is known for its significant agricultural presence and has a rich tradition of locally sourced ingredients. With that being said, many restaurants and tavernas emphasize the use of fresh, locally sourced produce, meats, and dairy. Visitors to Naxos can enjoy a wide range of dishes made with locally grown fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, and seafood. The food showcases the island’s agricultural bounty and traditional culinary heritage. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample Naxos’ famous potatoes, considered some of the best in Greece, and enjoy a glass of locally produced wine or raki!
5. Hike the Naxian Countryside
Since we did not have a car to take us around the island, we did not hike on our journey. With this being said, I did know that Naxos is well-known for wonderful hikes. Explore the island’s rugged terrain on foot, with trails that lead to hidden chapels, ancient towers, and breathtaking viewpoints. For example, the scenic hike to Mount Zas, the highest peak in the Cyclades, is a must-do if you have a way to get there. As a result, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding islands.
6. Take a Day Trip to Small Cyclades
Be sure to research day trips from Naxos to neighboring islands! This allows you to experience the enchanting beauty of the Aegean Sea. Paros, a short ferry ride away, has charming villages and golden beaches, while Mykonos offers a vibrant nightlife scene amidst its windmills and waters. Delos, an ancient marvel, has archaeological wonders and a rich history. It is easily accessible from nearby Mykonos. Though further away, Santorini’s allure is irresistible, with its breathtaking sunsets and picturesque villages perched atop dramatic cliffs. You can also visit the nearby Small Cyclades islands, including Iraklia, Schinoussa, and Koufonisia, where you can discover secluded beaches, charming fishing villages, and natural beauty. Each island offers a unique experience making day trips from Naxos an exciting adventure filled with exploration and discovery.
7. Enjoy Spectacular Sunsets
The sunsets in Naxos are mesmerizing, whether you’re sipping cocktails at a beach bar, on a sunset boat ride, or on your hotel porch, it’s an experience you can not miss! Every time we saw the sunset we were amazed! One night we even had dinner on the porch of our room at Avgoustus Suites to enjoy the changing colors in the sky. We also experienced an incredible sunset boat ride with Sea Power Rib Adventures. We had Alexandros as our skipper and he was beyond spectacular. We even hopped off the boat to a tiny, old church on an island filled with birds – truly a memory I will have forever. Sipping on wine, snorkeling, and swimming in see-through waters, was the best way to watch our final sunset in Naxos.
